Event narrative (NOAA)

Persistent onshore flow ahead of and during Ian led to high surf along the Volusia County coastline. A 68-year-old woman visiting from Kentucky died when high surf caused part of the dune she was standing on to collapse near the 2700 block of A1A in Ormond by the Sea. The woman was able to make it to the stairs of a dune crossover, but rescuers were unable to reach her in time as another wave swept her out to sea.
