Nearby ASOS observations indicate that blizzard conditions were met for at least 3 consecutive hours. Snow began at 11:45 am on February 8. Spotters reported an average snowfall of 6 inches by 5:50 pm. Total snowfall ranged from 17.5 inches in Melville to 33.5 inches in Medford.||Precipitation changed from rain to very heavy snow from north to south in the late morning and afternoon. The snow accumulated at rates up to 6 inches per hour at the height of the blizzard, accompanied by lightning, thunder, and even small hail. The very heavy snow also stranded numerous motor vehicles and caused some partial roof, house and shed collapses.||Winds gusted up to 47 mph at Eatons Neck. Non-thunderstorm winds also downed a tree in Lake Ronkonkoma NY at 02/09/2013 0233 LST.
