A snowmobiler got caught in an avalanche in the Monte Cristo Snowmobile Area near the Rich and Cache county line. The victim's friend called for help, prompting a multi-agency search in which the victim was found deceased around 6:20 p.m. Monday, February 3. Deputies reported the snow was very deep where the avalanche occurred and it took 4 hours to locate the victim. Prior to this event, the northern Utah mountains received 1-2 feet of snow between Friday, January 31 and Sunday, February 2, followed by rising temperatures and strong winds.
