March 16, 2002 · NOAA Storm Events record
Event narrative (NOAA)
Two snowboarders were buried and killed by a massive avalanche which swept down a steep slope in upper Big Cottonwood Canyon. The two were part of a large group of snowboarders traveling through the backcountry near the Brighton Ski Resort. Most of the group had traversed across an open slope when a large section of snow...6 to 8 feet deep...broke away above the final two boarders to cross the slope and swept over them.
