Event narrative (NOAA)
Two foreign tourists were caught in a rip current near the Daytona Beach Pier around 4:30 pm local time. Life guards were able to rescue both swimmers, a 32-year-old male and a 26-year-old female. The male swimmer was unconscious, while the female swimmer was conscious after being rescued. Both were transported to a local hospital with injuries, where the male later died. The female swimmer was hospitalized and later released.
