Event narrative (NOAA)

A 23-year old male drowned in a strong rip current at Fort Lauderdale Beach trying to save six of his friends when they were caught in the current. It occurred during the early evening after lifeguards had left for the day and the seven friends did not heed the red flag warnings lining the beaches. Lifeguards had saved 41 people on Sunday in the same location.
