Event narrative (NOAA)

Broadcast media and a local newspaper reported several rip current rescues and one drowning along the coast of Broward County during the afternoon. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to a husband and wife getting caught in a strong rip current at an unguarded beach at 4200 Galt Ocean Drive at about 1:30 PM EDT. They were transported to Holy Cross Hospital with life threatening injuries where the 80-year old woman was responsive but her 83-year old husband was not. He was later pronounced dead. Two men and a woman, ages unknown, were rescued from a rip current just north of Hallandale Beach. The men were transported to Aventura Hospital but the woman refused treatment.
