Event narrative (NOAA)
Mr. Terry Binion, a 38-year-old Hartsville resident, was struck and killed by lightning while riding a horse at the East Fork Stables in Allardt. He was riding with his wife, son, and 2 friends. The lightning bolt struck a tree, then bounced off the tree hitting the man and hitting his 2 friends, Kelly Overton and Kyle Deering. Mr. Binion and his horse died at the scene. Mrs. Binion, Overton and Deering were treated and released from Jamestown Regional Medical Center. Overton's horse also died. The damage on the tree by the lightning was about 2 inches wide and 20 feet down.
