Event narrative (NOAA)
A man was directly struck and killed by lightning while standing on Fort Lauderdale beach. Seven other people standing nearby were affected, one seriously. When the lightning struck, the thunderstorm was located over the mainland, several miles away. It was raining lightly and thunder could be heard.
