Event narrative (NOAA)
Thunderstorm winds estimated at 30 to 40 mph blowing across an area recently burned by a fire picked up ash and dust and carried it across Interstate 80 about 2 miles west of Carlin. Visibility along the Interstate was reduced to near zero in the ash and dust. This resulted in a 20 vehicle pileup resulting in four fatalities and 30 injuries.
